Many treatment plants and pumping stations still run on control systems specified in the 1990s, expanded piecemeal ever since, and documented mostly in the heads of the people who built them.
The cost of vendor lock-in
A control system tied to a single manufacturer limits every decision that follows. Replacement components must come from one source. Expansion follows one roadmap. And when that product line is discontinued, the utility inherits a migration project it never planned for.
Open, standards-based architectures cost no more to build, but they leave the utility free to choose the best component at every future step.
Data that stays inside the plant is wasted data
Most plants generate far more measurement data than they use. Flow, pressure, energy consumption, run hours and alarm history all exist — but locked inside individual PLCs and local HMIs, they cannot reveal the patterns that matter: which pump is degrading, which station consumes disproportionate energy, where infiltration is entering the network.
Collecting that data centrally, regardless of equipment brand, is the single change that turns a control system into a decision-support system.
Security is now an operational requirement
OT environments were designed for availability, not for exposure. As remote access, cloud reporting and mobile alarm handling become standard, network segmentation, access control and documented routines move from good practice to baseline requirement.
Where to start
Start with an inventory: what is installed, what is supported, what is documented, and who knows how it works. Modernisation projects fail far more often on missing documentation than on missing technology.
